This edited collection includes (but is not limited to) contributions in the form of chapters from the participants of the Workshop on the Macroeconomics of Migration at the University of Sheffield in June 2018. Migration is one of the most debated issues currently and is a pervasive feature of our economies. While extensive academic work has looked at the microeconomic aspects of migration, an open question is to better understand the links between migration and macroeconomic aggregates, such as per capita GDP. This book explores this overarching question, which has hit the key political and social debates all over Europe. Countries that are traditionally viewed as hosting economies for immigrants, such as for instance the UK and Germany, are concerned by immigration, while sending countries, such as Southern and Eastern European countries, are concerned by emigration. The contributions in this edited collection analyse empirically and theoretically the challenges international economic migration generates both in sending and receiving countries, thus offering a comprehensive approach to the question asked above. The book looks at several important issues in the current debates related to the labour market effects of migration for natives, the bi-directional relation between taxation and migration, migration and the informal economy, migration and business cycle dynamics, and brain waste. This edited collection will be of interest to academics, practitioners and policy makers who wish to take a closer look at the macroeconomic effects of migration and learn more about the current challenges posed by immigration in some countries and emigration in others.

This book explores the experience of China's migrant laborers in Shanghai from economic, anthropological, and gendered analyses, offering extraordinary insights into the life-world of the marginalized people. China has hundreds of millions of internal migrants coming from the countryside to the big cities in search of fame, fortune, or just a living. The author also explores the political, economic, and gendered realities of this marginalized, yet huge population. With an in-depth and multidisciplinary examination of the experience of restaurant workers in Shanghai, this book sheds humanizing new light on the experience of the megacity from the inside and will be of direct value to policymakers, demographers, urbanists, anthropologists, sociologists, and responsible citizens. Yang Shen, with a PhD from the London School of Economics, is an assistant professor at School of International and Public Affairs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her work explores individual experiences of Chinese migrant workers within the contemporary globalized economy. Her current research focuses on housing and intimacy, online dating, and migrant housing and informal settlement in China.

In De migratiemachine bespreken deskundigen uit verschillende vakgebieden deze neveneffecten. De biometrische technieken die momenteel in Nederlands en Europees verband worden gebruikt om de toestroom van migranten te beteugelen, maken inbreuk op de integriteit van het lichaam. Onbetrouwbare en onvoldoende controleerbare en corrigeerbare informatiebestanden kunnen leiden tot onterechte afwijzingen van migranten. En een buitenproportionele inzet van technologie legt een onevenredig grote nadruk op controle. Vroeger was migratiebeleid niet zo van technologie afhankelijk. Met paspoorten en een slagboom bij de grensovergang kwam je al een heel eind. Nu kent het migratiebeleid een sterke technologische dimensie. Leeftijdsonderzoek door middel van botanalyse voor minderjarige asielzoekers, DNA-tests voor gezinshereniging, spraakherkenningstechnologie bij het inburgeringsexamen in het land van herkomst en Europese databanken om de gegevens van illegale migranten in op te slaan. Deze technologisering helpt om procedures efficiënter te laten verlopen, maar genereert ook neveneffecten.
